FORENSIC ODONTOLOGY – SYLLABUS – Course Code: FO-005
INTRODUCTION- Forensic science is a vital instrument for the detection or investigation of crime and the administration of justice, providing crucial information about the evidence found at crime scene, it is especially important that the training and education of forensic scientists provide a solid scientific background and a broad base in criminalistics. The validity of those results depends on the knowledge, skills, and experience of the forensic scientists working to obtain them. A forensic scientist must be capable of integrating knowledge and skills in the examination, analysis, interpretation, reporting, and testimonial support of evidence. Forensic Odontology / forensic dentistry or bite mark evidence expertise mainly involves the identification of an assailant by comparing a record of their dentition (set of teeth) with a record of a bite mark left on a victim. The forensic dentist, however, is to an ordinary dentist what the forensic pathologist is to an ordinary physician. Using the teeth and dental records to identify the dead people is the main field of odontology and forensic dentistry. Forensic dentists have become a very important part of investigation on missing persons, disaster recovery, and solving and prosecuting crimes. According to various web resources- Since the work of a forensic dentist is time consuming and that the working hours are irregular, a forensic dentist may receive a daily wage of $2,000 or as much as $150,000 a year when hired as a full-time forensic dentist. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the median hourly earnings of forensic science technicians are about $21.79 per hour and Those in private practice who offer consulting services typically earn more.
